Joining Ironstone Adventure Riding Club members on a Capel forest ride means following trails through dense timber country, surrounded by towering Marri, Jarrah and Sheoak trees. Along the way, remnants of historic logging railways and old logging tracks trace the landscape, while wildlife offers the only other company beyond fellow riders.
For Jeremy Connor, it is both an adventure and a deep well of peace, with a profound effect on his health and wellbeing, a view shared by other members. Jeremy is a founding member and treasurer of the Ironstone Adventure Riding Club, whose members regularly set off on off-road bikes into publicly accessible areas of the state forest.
“When you’re riding you don’t think about your daily
troubles,” Jeremy said. “You’re completely focused on what’s in front of you and watching to stay safe and avoid any obstacles or slippery surfaces, using clutch control, balance and the bike’s momentum. It’s not about going fast, but about enjoying the experience and surroundings. At the end of it all, you’re just so chilled and mellow.”
Over the past year, the club’s longstanding relationship with Healthway has evolved from event sponsor to partnership.
With Healthway’s support, the club actively promotes healthy living, including a strong focus on men’s mental health and wellbeing, an alcohol-free, smoke- and vape-free venue and events. When members return from their ride the club provides nutritious barbecue options, including salads, fresh fruit and drinking water.
Beyond organised events, many members also arrange their own rides, using club facilities to prepare, connect and, at times, stay onsite in an alcohol-free environment. Occasional supervised riding for children is offered on the property, supporting family participation and skill development in a safe and inclusive environment. Once in the bush, riders take responsibility for planning and safety, reflecting a strong culture of respect, accountability and shared care.
“We’ve built a culture of respect where there are clear, simple specific requirements of members rather than rules, so the atmosphere remains informal and welcoming,” he said.
“That has paid off in spades, with trouble free behaviour and a strong network of support and friendships, some even resulting in marriages. At the end of the day, that’s what people come for. Having these adventures in such a peaceful place restores the soul.”
