Supporting healthier lives in the Pilbara

Newman resident Lisa Massang

When temperatures regularly reach a stifling 45 – 47 degrees and the nearest beach is hundreds of kilometres away, staying active can feel out of reach. For Lisa Massang and her family in Newman, this often meant little more than a quick walk after sunset, until they came across the Shire of East Pilbara’s new Community Active Living Program.

Recognising the challenges residents face, the Shire received Healthway funding to break down barriers to physical activity and promote healthier lifestyles in Newman, Nullagine and Marble Bar, even in the hottest conditions.

Its free Active Living Starter Pack offers a term of group fitness and gym sessions, casual sports and pool access, encouraging participants to be active at least four times per week. For Lisa and her 17-year-old daughter Ezri, the program has been a game-changer.

“It’s been a real opportunity to step outside our comfort zone, trying Pilates and high-intensity workouts that we’d never contemplated. We loved it straight away and went back for more,” Lisa said.

“These days, we do around seven classes a week, including a MetaPower class with skipping, dumbbells and weights, which has definitely pushed us.

“In between classes we go to the gym and check in with the coach, who modifies our program according to how we’re tracking.”

Lisa and family are among many success stories, with attendance at group fitness classes rising from 10 to 30 people per session, alongside increased use of the pool and gym.

Shire President Councillor Anthony Middleton said the program showed how practical, local initiatives can make a real difference in remote communities.

“This program gives people a simple way to try something new, build confidence and get moving in a supportive environment,” he said.

“It is great to see local families making the most of it and encouraging each other along the way.”
For Lisa, with a full-on job at the senior high school and with Ezri approaching final year exams, the program has also been a great stress reliever.

“When I’m there, I don’t think about work, I just focus on what I’m doing. After years of sleep issues, I’m sleeping so much better and feel much more upbeat,” she said.

“And the lovely thing is that my daughter and I push and encourage each other and can’t wait for the next class.”

Having experienced the benefits, Lisa is a big advocate.

“I’m stoked that the Shire is so supportive and that the staff at the gym are so encouraging,” she said.
