Local Government Public Health Plans

Supporting Local Governments to build healthier, more connected communities

Local governments play a vital role in shaping the health and wellbeing of communities across WA. At Healthway, we’re helping councils bring their Public Health Plans to life to create lasting, positive change.

Our recent audit of WA local government websites revealed that fewer than one in three councils currently have a Public Health Plan. This highlights a significant gap — but also a golden opportunity to lead the way in community health.

A practical tool to support action
To support local governments, we’ve developed a practical, easy-to-use Public Health Plan template. It’s designed to:

  • turn planning into action
  • simplify the process of developing and delivering Public Health Plans
  • empower councils to do great things for community health and wellbeing.

Built on evidence, designed for impact

The template draws on Healthway-funded research, public health data, insights from leading studies and input from health and related agencies and experts. It helps councils make informed decisions that reflect the lived experiences of their communities.

We know there’s a wealth of public health guidance available — we’ve distilled that knowledge into an adaptable, practical template that simplifies planning and supports meaningful action.

Public Health Plan Activation Program

The Public Health Plan Activation Program supports the activation of Local Government Public Health Plans to improve the health and wellbeing of local communities.

We work in partnership with Local Governments to support projects that respond to community needs identified within public health plans and are aligned to the priorities identified in Healthway’s Strategic Plan 2024-2029: Creating a healthier Western Australia together. The priorities include promoting healthy eating, active living and mental wellbeing, and preventing and reducing use of alcohol, tobacco and e-cigarettes.
