Our Visiting Fellowship builds the capability of WA’s health promotion workforce by bringing leading experts to WA.
Fellows work alongside key health promotion teams and partners, sharing expertise to strengthen practice across the state. They also deliver seminars and workshops for the public, the health promotion workforce and other relevant organisations.
Up to $35,000 (excluding GST) for up to three months, covering professional stipend, travel expenses and accommodation for the fellow.
This opportunity is available to research institutions, community groups, agencies and other non-government organisations.
Organisations should apply in partnership to co-host a fellow, expanding the reach of their impact and shared learning.
The fellow must demonstrate expertise in health promotion, with skills that benefit the local research community, related disciplines and relevant organisations, including government and not-for-profit agencies. The fellow’s expertise must align with one or more of our priority health areas and they may be from interstate or overseas.
- Public lecture: Raise awareness of the fellow’s work and promote the program activities across WA.
- Short course: Build practical skills and capability across the health promotion workforce. Where possible, offer the course for credit through a recognised university extension program.
- Roundtable discussions: Bring together relevant health professionals to share insights, test ideas and strengthen collaboration on priority health issues.

- Media engagement (in consultation with us): Provide trusted expert commentary that strengthens public understanding of issues aligned with our priority areas and the fellow’s work.

Request process:
- Candidates must complete a Visiting Fellowship Request Form (Word template).
- The research grants office at your administering institution must submit your request via the Lotterywest Healthway Grants Portal by the closing date.
- Requests submitted by the candidate or emailed to us will not be accepted.

Terms and Conditions
- The focus of the proposed program of activities must be directly relevant to health promotion practice, policy and/or research in WA and must be aligned to at least one of our priority health areas.
- A proposed program of activities that include a variety of engagement methods to increase the reach of the fellow across the health promotion community, including those located in rural and remote areas of WA.
- The activities must benefit health promotion groups and other organisations in WA beyond the host agencies, ensuring that the program’s benefits extend to the wider health promotion sector.
- International fellows are encouraged, however those based within Australia (outside of WA) may also be considered.
- The fellow is required to spend a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of three months in WA.
- The fellow is expected to be an exemplary ambassador for their administering organisation/institution and Healthway.
- Host organisations are incorporated organisations based in WA. Research institutions, community groups, agencies or other non-government organisations encouraged to apply in partnership to co-host the fellow. It is expected the host organisations will collaborate on the planning, organisation and promotion of the fellow’s schedule.
- The activities are expected to be completed within nine months of receiving the grant. Requests to delay the fellows travel will only be permitted in cases of significant and unforeseen changes in circumstances.
- The budget allocation may cover economy travel, accommodation, meals, workshop catering and any other approved fees.
- Requests must be submitted via an administering organisation. Administering organisations must be incorporated organisations based within WA.
- Candidates, their research groups and department or institution are not eligible if they receive any direct or indirect support from organisations linked to harmful industries such as tobacco, vaping, gambling, unhealthy food and drink or alcohol.
- Fellows whose expertise and proposed activities focus on the clinical or laboratory studies, or trials of treatments or therapies for existing conditions or diseases.
