Travelling Fellowship Guidelines

Our Travelling Fellowship gives health promotion researchers the opportunity to learn from leading experts and deepen their understanding of global best practice in programs, policy and research.

On returning to WA, fellows will bring this knowledge home and share insights with colleagues, partners and the wider sector to strengthen health promotion policy and practice across the state.

Up to $10,000 (excluding GST) for a program of up to one month, covering travel expenses, accommodation and session or conference fees.

WA-based mid to senior career researchers who have held a PhD for at least three (3) years and have demonstrated professional program, policy or research experience. The fellow must have expertise relevant to one or more of our priority health areas.

  • Presentations and seminars: Attend and contribute to presentations and seminars to build knowledge aligned with our priority areas.
  • Meetings with international experts: Connect with leading international experts to gain new insights, strengthen professional networks and build partnerships.
  • Field visits: Experience health promotion in action by visiting programs and settings that demonstrate new and innovative approaches in practice.
  • Policy, strategy or program contribution: Contribute expert input to policy development forums, strategic planning or program design, with a clear focus on our priority areas and alignment with the fellow’s program.
  • Knowledge exchange workshops: Share and explore international learnings in a WA context while showcasing WA research, practice and innovation.

Terms and Conditions

  • The focus of the proposed program of activities must be directly relevant to health promotion practice, policy and/or research in WA and must be aligned to at least one of our priority health areas .
  • A proposed program of travel, identifying key experts and groups that the candidate will meet.
  • It is expected that the fellow will meet with international experts and networks, attend meetings, conferences and observe programs and best practice approaches.
  • Following returning to WA, a commitment to meet with us to explore opportunities for knowledge sharing. This may include delivering a presentation or workshop at Healthway to upskill the health promotion workforce.
  • The fellow is expected to be an exemplary ambassador for their administering organisation/institution and Healthway.
  • Candidates must be Australian citizens or permanent residents and their usual place of residence must be WA.
  • Travelling Fellowships are for candidates who have held a PhD for at least three years and are able to demonstrate significant professional experience.
  • International travel is expected to be completed within nine months of receiving the grant. Requests to delay travel will only be permitted in cases of significant and unforeseen changes in circumstances.
  • The budget allocation may cover economy travel, accommodation and meals and any other fees approved in your request.
  • Requests must be submitted via an administering organisation. Administering organisations must be incorporated organisations based within WA.
  • Candidates, their research groups and department or institution are not eligible if they receive any direct or indirect support from organisations linked to harmful industries such as tobacco, vaping, gambling, unhealthy food and drink or alcohol.
  • Fellows whose expertise and proposed activities focus on the clinical or laboratory studies or trials of treatments or therapies for existing conditions or diseases.
