The Fresh Minds Project

The school noticed rising exposure to vaping and strengthened its approach to prevention and education. The Fresh Minds project is a whole-school initiative designed to keep students safe and informed.

Project activities:

The Fresh Minds project empowers students and the school community through:

  • Classroom learning: Using Cancer Council WA’s Clear the Air resources to teach students about vaping risks and how to seek help.
  • Expert guidance: Connecting a staff member with Clear the Air’s Community of Practice for ongoing support and best-practice strategies.
  • School-wide awareness: Promoting the Department of Education’s Anti‑Vaping Toolkit in classrooms, newsletters and events.
  • Student voice: A student-led anti-vaping poster competition, with winning designs displayed across the school.
  • Family engagement: A parent information session supporting confident, open conversations about vaping.
  • Stronger policy: Updated Health and Wellbeing Policy with clear expectations, procedures for early intervention and consistent follow-up.

Sustainability:

Fresh Minds is designed for lasting impact across the whole school community through:

  • Curriculum integration: Ongoing use of Clear the Air and Anti‑Vaping Toolkit resources in health education.
  • Policy consistency: The strengthened policy guides long-term prevention and response.
  • Ongoing monitoring and renewal: Annual review of vaping trends and updated messaging using the latest resources.

Healthway funding can support parent engagement activities, prizes for students, teacher relief and printing resources.
