Motorcycling WA: fuelled by passion, powered by Healthway

Mini X - Motorcycling WA

Motorcycling WA is powered by a deep community love of the sport, which has thrived for more than 100 years. In 2025, this passion is reflected in a packed calendar of training and events for all ages – including a Mini X program for four to 12-year-olds, Moto-Inclusion for accessibility, the WA Road Racing Championship and the pinnacle for the 4,500 licensed motorcross riders competing for a place on the podium, the WA MX State Championship.

Healthway has supported Motorcycling WA throughout its journey, providing funding that has helped the organisation promote healthy eating and lifestyles, including smoke-free and vape-free environments.

Dan Robinson is a great example of someone who lives and breathes the sport. He shares his passion and skills as a volunteer with Motorcycling WA. Until recently, Mr Robinson was president of one of the WA’s largest motorcycling organisations. Now he is fully devoted to being a dad and coach to his 11-year-old daughter, as well as a registered coach for other Mini X competitors. As a rider himself, Mr Robinson brings valuable insights to share – especially about how physically demanding the sport is.

“Motocross riders are athletes – full stop. You need core strength, strong legs and arms, cardio fitness, mental focus… it’s all in there. You’re using your whole body to control the bike through jumps, braking bumps, corners. After 15 minutes on the track, you’re exhausted. It’s a total workout,” he said.

Mr Robinson sees it as a fundamental lesson for participants – especially from the earliest years – to adopt the kind of healthy habits that will support them throughout their sporting lives. He uses Healthway messaging to emphasise the importance of healthy eating, hydration and sleep, even for his youngest students.

“Kids quickly learn that what they eat and how well they sleep directly affects how they ride. Good hydration is crucial, especially in the heat. We talk about things like fuelling your body for race day, eating real food, and getting enough sleep. And they listen because they want to be better riders,” Mr Robinson said.

That education includes Healthway’s messaging about not vaping or smoking – something the riders understand will affect their performance.

“They know that anything that affects their breathing or energy levels affects their riding. They respect the fact that being fit gives them an edge, and that steers them away from bad choices,” he said.

For Mr Robinson, one of the other invaluable benefits of the Healthway grant is the ability for coaches like himself to travel to regional areas to share their love of the sport and help develop young talent. Healthway’s support covers coaching, travel, venue hire and contributes toward rider entry fees – making it more affordable for new families and competitors. Ultimately, Mr Robinson says the sport offers more than just a fun activity.

“The motocross community is like a big family. You’ll see people helping each other fix bikes, lend parts and sometimes even lend bikes – just to help each other out. We all cheer for one another’s kids, even if they are racing against each other. That shows the juniors’ real sportsmanship. It’s competitive, but it’s also supportive. Kids grow up here learning resilience, teamwork, and respect – and that stays with them throughout life.”
