Darren Armitage has joined Healthway as Acting Director, Health Promotion, while Dr Jo Clarkson is on leave until the end of October. He will be working with Candice McKeone, Healthway’s Health Promotion Research and Policy Officer and Emma Hills, our Health Promotion Projects Officer.
Darren has a wealth of practical experience in population and public health, both in Australia and internationally. As Australian team leader for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (AusAID), Darren managed communicable and non-communicable disease programs in China and the South Pacific and has held numerous health positions including in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Midwest regions of WA, with a strong focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues.
His academic qualifications include a Masters of Health Science, Masters of Public Policy and Management, a Post Graduate Degree in Health Promotion and a Bachelor of Education.
However, Darren believes his most difficult project to date has been as a “Stay-at-Home Dad” raising Sara’s and his three year old son – Toby.
While he is at Healthway, Darren will support the development of Healthway’s new Strategic Plan for beyond 2017.
“I’m really looking forward to working with the team at Healthway as well as meeting with and learning about the varied projects and activities run by Healthway’s partners in the health, sports, arts, racing and community sectors,” said Darren. “By working together we can achieve great things to improve the health of all West Australians.”
