Community Groups Win Health Accolades in the Healthway Excellence in Health Promotion Awards 2008

Many community organisations throughout Western Australia have recently received recognition for their achievements in Healthway’s Excellence in Health Promotion Awards. Healthway presents its Excellence in Health Promotion Awards every two years and this year was the eighth occasion.

Award recipients in the areas of health, research, sport, arts and racing included major organisations with Statewide membership and impact as well as small, local community groups. Many of the finalists and winners were from country areas.

The objectives of the Awards are to:

  • encourage excellence in health promotion;
  • foster innovation and commitment in health promotion;
  • acknowledge the effort made by many health, research, sport, arts and racing organisations and health agencies; and
  • encourage positive publicity for Healthway and its activities.

Judging is based on the nominee’s outstanding contribution to the promotion of health strategies or healthy initiatives and the following criteria are taken into account when considering nominees:

  • outstanding and lasting achievement of healthy environments;
  • demonstrated commitment to health promotion;
  • innovative and creative promotion and marketing of the health messages;
  • the development of additional initiatives outside the contractual obligations;
  • strong commitment to the education of patrons, members, staff or participants towards the health message;
  • communication between sponsored organisations, health agency and/or Healthway;
  • the pro-activeness of the organisation to promote the health message or structural change;
  • dynamic leadership and vision in relation to the implementation of healthy initiatives;
  • any barriers that were overcome when implementing structural change;
  • the development of additional health / promotional / educational / structural initiatives outside the sponsored health message; and 
  • a willingness to undertake evaluation and/or utilise evaluation results.
